Bishop Todd and Reverend Patsy McGregor
Gerry W. Cox, Jr., age 89, of Deerfield Beach, Florida passed away on December 2, 2019. Gerry was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and spent his early years in southeast Pennsylvania. He attended and graduated from St. Andrews School in Middletown, Delaware and showed great promise in athletics, a passion he would pursue the rest of his life. Gerry’s college education at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania was interrupted by a two year stint in the Army, including service in Germany. As a young man, Gerry was also as a member of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, a volunteer cavalry troop originally organized during the Revolutionary War and still in existence today. Upon his return to the states he graduated from Ursinus College in 1955 and that same year married Audrey Mae Rittenhouse of Lansdale, Pennsylvania, who also graduated from Ursinus College.
His entire working career was spent with Scott Paper Company. Gerry became a leading sales executive for Scott and as a result of his success he was in great demand in many new and growing sales markets. He and Audrey moved several times during their early years together which resulted in a vast network of friends from all over the country. In each city where they landed , life for Gerry and Audrey centered on family, church and sports. The local Episcopal Church and the nearby tennis club were always two of their favorite places, with Gerry and Audrey always taking leadership roles in both.
Gerry’s final move with Scott Paper was in 1980 to Deerfield Beach, Florida where he and Audrey fully embraced the active Florida life. Partnering with Audrey in mixed doubles tennis, they were Senior Olympics national champions shortly after he retired. In retirement, Gerry and Audrey added travel to their list of favorite activities. They eventually traveled to all seven continents, visited Madagascar to be with family too many times to count and were regulars on the cruise ship circuit throughout their later years.
Gerry was a man of faith and integrity, living a life full of joy, generosity and gratitude to his very last day. He will be missed by all who knew him, and missed most by those who knew him best.
Gerry is survived by his wife Audrey, a sister Mary C.C. Heiserman, two daughters Elizabeth (Betsy) Cox Wenzel (Kenneth) and the Reverend Doctor Patricia (Patsy) C. McGregor (Rt. Rev. Doctor Todd), four grandchildren Brian C. Wenzel (Stephanie), Corban M. Sandoe (Joseph), Dr. Kevin Merola-Wenzel (Christine) and Charese H. McGregor, and three great-grandchildren (Caroline, Jabin and Charlotte).
A memorial service honoring Gerry will be held at 12 noon on Saturday December 14, 2019 at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, 1111 E. Sample Road, Pompano Beach, Florida 33064.
